Who’s ready for some creepy crawler fun? This week we are talking all about insects and I am so excited to share these easy prep, no print, simple insect activities with you!

LITERACY: INSECT SYLLABLES

Write the numbers 1-3 on sticky notes and set on a flat surface. Set out a basket of toy insects or print pictures of insects. Have your child pick an insect then, say and clap how many syllables the word has. Sort each insect by number of syllables.

MATH: CATERPILLAR NUMBER LINE

Cut out various colored paper circles. Create a simple caterpillar head from one of the circles and tape it to the wall. Write numbers 1-10 or 1-20 on the other circles and hide them around the room. Have your child hunt for the circles then put them in order and tape them to the wall to build a number caterpillar.

GROSS MOTOR: INSECT WALK

Sketch various insects on a sheet of paper and go on an insect walk. As you walk, hunt for different bugs and talk about each one you find. What color is it? Does it fly? Does it jump? Check off each insect you find.

SENSORY: INSECT BIN

Let’s create a simple insect sensory bin! Fill a bin with dried black beans then toss in some toy insects. Add a muffin tin, scoops, magnifying glass, and tongs for playing.

CRAFT: FINGERPRINT BUGS

Cut a leaf out of green construction paper. Set out various colored paints and have your child add colored fingerprint dots to their leaf. Let dry then ask your child to use a black marker to turn each fingerprint into a bug.

Snack: Butterfly Life Cycle

Divide a paper plate into 4 sections. Label each section with one word: eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly. Set out the list of foods below and talk about the life cycle of a butterfly as you hand out each. Marshmallows (Eggs), Gummy Worm (Caterpillar), Celery Piece (Chrysalis),Cucumber Slice Cut in Half (Butterfly). Then, EAT!
